On March 3, 2012, Bald Girls – Group Exhibition of Works by Xiao Lu, Li Xinmo and Lan Jing, curated by German-Chinese Yong Xian, was held in Beijing at the Iberia Center for Contemporary Art. A strong clear stand for women’s rights distinguished it from many other Chinese exhibitions of female artists, causing much controversy and discussion and producing a wide impact. In order to change the social reality of sexual discrimination in China and to achieve a sustainable enlightenment of feminist thinking, Bald Girls, creates a platform for the dissemination of feminist thinking through the format of art, and is committed to the introduction and research of cutting edge feminist theory. In collaboration with Taikang Space and the German Goethe-Institut in Beijing, Bald Girls also promotes Chinese avant-garde feminist art internationally, and at the same time introduces internationally influential feminist artists to China.
Bald Girls has evolved from an exhibition into an idea and has become a base for the promotion of the development of cutting-edge feminist art, founding the Bald Girls website and journal to serve as an outlet and a medium for the voice of female artists in China. It marks the public appearance of Chinese avant-garde feminist art with a spirit of independence and freedom.
Bald Girls art calls for this spirit of independence. It trusts in the power of art to intervene in society and culture, and advocates the avant-garde quality, the active character, the presence, the spirituality and the independence of feminist art. Ideas are the weapons of Bald Girls, and society, politics and culture are our battlefield.
